In Pakistan, 400,000 babies die before their first birthday every year, and 14,000 women die in childbirth or from complications during pregnancy. A leading factors causing these horrific statistics is access to quality healthcare due to distance and poverty. This often means that pregnant women do not receive any formal medial support throughout their pregnancies. During childbirth, many women deliver at home with a traditional birth attendants, who do not have medical training, equipment or medication. It means the environment for childbirth is often unsanitary and unhygienic, leading to infection, which unless treated, could become fatal. If any complications occur, the traditional midwives are unable to respond effectively, sometimes leading to the death of the mother.
