On 26 August 2026, a major flash flood struck Rasuwa District in northern Nepal after a sudden high-altitude surge of water entered the Bhote Koshi River. The Nepal Red Cross Society reported flood waves of 8–10 metres affecting Timure, Rasuwagadhi and Syabrubesi, with severe damage extending into neighbouring Nuwakot District.
As of the Nepal Red Cross Society update on 27 August 2026, citing the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, at least 157 people were reported dead and hundreds remained missing.
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has referred to the disaster as a glacial lake outburst flood, potentially caused by an ice avalanche blocking the upstream Lhende River.
The IFRC allocated funds from its Disaster Response Emergency Fund for emergency shelter, safe drinking water, relief supplies and restoring access to communities cut off along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers.

On the morning of 26 August 2026, a major flash flood struck Nepal’s Rasuwa district after a sudden and intense surge of water entered the Bhote Koshi River from the Tibet/Xizang side of China at approximately 9:15am.
The Timure, Rasuwagadhi and Syabrubesi areas were rapidly affected, with flood waves estimated by the Nepal Red Cross Society at 8–10 metres in some locations.
The flood tore downstream through a remote, mountainous stretch of northern Nepal, hitting Rasuwa and neighbouring Nuwakot hardest.
High-alert warnings were issued for downstream communities along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers in Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha and Chitwan.
With communication to the affected areas cut off, the Nepal Red Cross Society activated Emergency Response Teams and mobilised volunteers, while the government deployed the Nepal Army and helicopters for rescue and evacuation.
A magnitude 4.4 earthquake was recorded in the wider region before the flood. It has not been established as the cause and is noted only for chronology.

On 26 August 2026, the IFRC announced nearly CHF 1 million through its Disaster Response Emergency Fund to support the Nepal Red Cross Society response.
