Struggling through chest-high, muddy floodwaters, hundreds of people slowly move toward safety, clutching their belongings above their heads to keep them dry. As they enter Feni, a city in southeast Bangladesh, the reason for its description as the epicenter of one of the country’s worst Bangladesh floods in recent memory becomes evident. Since Wednesday night, 11 districts have been inundated, leaving large parts of this city of nearly 1.5 million people submerged.
Bangladesh is a nation intertwined with its rivers and waterways, which are crucial for fishing and rice farming. However, the country is also no stranger to floods and cyclones, especially in recent years, as scientists warn that human-induced climate change is intensifying extreme weather events.
Nearly 5 million people in Bangladesh are affected by these floods, with at least 18 lives tragically lost—though fears persist that this number could rise as the floodwaters recede. Relief agencies are urging people worldwide to donate to support the affected communities. While monsoon rains cause widespread damage every year, climate change is altering weather patterns and leading to more frequent and severe extreme weather events.
With a population of 170 million, Bangladesh ranks among the countries most vulnerable to natural disasters and climate change, according to the Global Climate Risk Index. The south eastern regions around Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar, home to about a million Rohingya refugees from Myanmar, are particularly hard hit.
